Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head Island, the second largest barrier island on the east coast of the United States is shaped much like a shoe or boot. Hilton Head Island is conveniently located at the southern end of Beaufort County, between Savannah, Georgia (30 miles) and Charleston, South Carolina (90 miles).
Hilton Head Island encompasses approximately 25,000 acres and is approximately 12 miles long and 5 miles wide. The warm waters of the Caribbean are pushed up to the area by the Gulf Stream. These warmer waters allow residents to enjoy tropical climates nearly year round. Locals enjoy warm sandy beaches, bordered by sand dunes on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Local roads are adorned by palm trees and live oaks lined with Spanish moss and other tropical accents. Most open space consists of salt water marshes and fresh water lagoons. Bluffton
Bluffton sits just across the Intracoastal Waterway from Hilton Head Island, on a bluff overlooking the May River. Bluffton is considered the 'mainland' and rests directly between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, Georgia.
Bluffton recently expanded its territory by 32,000 acres allowing it to become the fifth largest town in South Carolina. Even with this recent addition Bluffton has preserved its long historical heritage and character. Because of the Gulf Stream, and its ability to bring warmer waters up from the Caribbean, the average year round temperature on Hilton Head Island is a balmy 69 degrees. With its calming sea breezes Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, enjoy average midday and evening temperatures of 75 and 55 degrees respectively. With the lack of cold many of the areas 'green areas' thrive. Lawns stay lush, trees and shrubs are abundant and local golf courses enjoy ideal playing conditions.
